If you have had any kind of a conversation with me you probably already know two things. First, that I am from a very creative family & second, that the lake I grew up on is a huge part of my life. These two things have very much affected my life & my design work.
I am the fourth generation of a family who has long loved Lake Me-me-sag-a-me-sing. I grew up playing in the same waters & jumping off the same rocks that my family has since the 1930s. In the summertime the lake is lined with family & cousins. No matter how far I travel, I always love being on my lake & sharing it with other people who love it as much as I do.
One of the people who loved this lake was my Grandma Alta. She was a huge creative force in my life & as we grow we can see pieces of her in all of us grandkids. She & her two sisters were amazing artists & our community is filled with their paintings. My Dad is also a talented painter & sketches beautifully. Although I did not get that specific talent I know my attention for detail comes from them. An eye for colour & feel for texture is something I share with all my siblings & cousins.
Late this summer my sisters & myself decided we wanted to showcase this place that we love so much. My sister Amy is an incredible Interior Designer with a love for flowers. My sister Melissa is a talented photographer & she does her best work in natural light. We have done style shoots in other location & lots of props. We decided to challenge ourselves with a spontaneous style shoot using only things we could find at our camp, in the woods & in the garden.
We called my beautiful cousin Kendall to be our model & started looking for things that inspired us. I made a bouquet, a flower crown & a few centrepieces from the garden. Some of them were wild flowers, some were from the trees & some were in the flower beds. We used furniture from the cottages, a tablecloth that Amy had at the house, silverware that belonged to our Grandma & dishes I've been collecting. Kendall wore a lace crop top that my incredible friend Jesse of WesternGrace designed & made. We see spent the afternoon gathering it all & designing flowers.
Amy set the table wonderfully & Melissa went to work capturing it all. Kendall was the perfect model & we had so much fun highlighting some of our favourite things. The docks have always been a meeting place for us & it meant so much to us to be able to use them. I know my Grandma Alta would have loved to see her granddaughters enjoying a place she loved & being creative in ways that we learned from her. It was the perfect way to remember her & to end to a lovely summer.
