This isn't exactly a post about my floral designs or my latest creative endeavour. This one is about inspiration in design & in all areas of life. Sometimes I get caught up in our world of producing & forget that there is more to my life than my career. I believe that humans were meant to create but I also believe that we are here on earth to be relational & to discover. With all this in mind I decided to take some time before the end of 2015 & explore some other areas of life that didn't revolve around petals or pinterest. So I took off for a month to Haiti without any design work at all!
This past spring I went to Haiti to do some volunteer work & learn about the country. I fell in love hard & fast! I instantly felt connected with both the profound beauty of the island & painful desperation of the country's living conditions. Haiti feels very deeply complex & the people live life in such a raw way. I knew before I boarded my plane home that I wanted to go back. Both times in Haiti, I volunteered with an organization called The Hands And Feet Project in Jacmel & Grand Goave, Haiti. They have set up Children's Villages for orphaned & abandoned children. They are fighting to keep families together & fighting against the orphan crisis in Haiti. I feel so good about the work they are doing there & was overjoyed to be able to be a part of it.
I did not design anything the entire month I was there & it was very strange for me. It was an eerie realization for me when I saw that my design skill set was very useless in a place of often desperate survival. Decoration & ascetics are forgotten when you are trying to find a way to feed your family. It was a humbling experience & it made me appreciate that part of my culture here in North America. In the end I used my creative abilities to make nutritious meals out of what we had & prepared the Christmas gifts for the children.
Needless to say the children were good for my soul & the island was so incredibly beautiful! I was overwhelmed with inspiration for designs everyday. The foliage is lush with palm tress in every view. The hibiscus & bougainvillea blooms pop out everywhere. The colours seem to be other-worldly & time doesn't feel like it moves at the same pace as the time does further north. It was an amazing time of rejuvenation & a sobering reminder of life's necessities.
It is my hope that times like this will be a staple throughout my life. I want to always feel like a person who creates instead of a human that produces. I am so thankful to have to freedom to do this & so blessed to come home to a profession that I adore. I'm ready to get my hands busy with new designs!!!
I hope that through my photos you can see a little glimpse of the beauty & mystery of the island that I've come to love so much.
Welcome to my muses & adventures in the world of flowers & design.
