I come from a family of flower lovers & an upbringing surrounded by nature so I can not tell you how important it is to me to bring nature into my living spaces. I always have a slew of house plants in my home to help clean my air but I also think that blooming flowers also help clean your life in a different way.
Throughout history flowers were always present in areas of living. From the time of the Ancient Egyptians & Romans to Medieval Europe, every culture had some kind of floral touch in their homes. I fear that this generation is missing out on these benefits in a big way.
For those who don't have a natural green thumb adding fresh cut flowers can be that connection to nature you desire. It doesn't have to be a giant bouquets every few days. It could just be a single bottle, jar or vase that you switch out a single bloom in every couple of weeks. I see it in my sisters & friends who have also taken to this concept that once you start its a change that you notice & want to continue long term.
I could go on for days about this but I will try to keep it short with my top 10 reasons why you should let flowers into your home.
1.They improve your health
Flowers have been clinically & scientifically proven to fight stress & ease tension. Studies show that people who are surrounded by flowers & natural beauty actually heal faster than those lacking it. There is a reason why we send flowers to a hospital or to someone feeling blue. They are an easy way to give your mental health a boost & take a step in a positive direction.
2.They inspire creativity
Every person, whether they realize it or not, is drawl to certain colours & textures. It is always so interesting to me to see what people like & dislike in the flower world. I truly believe that having flowers in your daily life adds a level of natural art & a depth to the creative things we do. I often think of an idea for a design by a stem with a unique curve or I'll want to wear a certain colour after seeing it on a petal. I think this is why we see so many flowers in classic art as well as in contemporary design & marketing.
3.They bring you into the present & help you enjoy this season
Even in today's world of overnight shipping & global floral markets there are still months when you aren't able to buy peonies or times where certain flower types are nicer than others. In the same way that we buy seasonal produce you can enjoy the changes of the season with the flowers on your table. This makes us cherish the times when we can have our favourites & it forces us to try new things that perhaps we wouldn't otherwise try.
4.They add fragrance & warmth to any space
Flowers are a great way to add comfort to your home & welcome guests. When you watch people walk into a space that smells like fresh flowers they almost always have a smile on their face. I see it in flowers shops every day! You can actually see it on their faces as the tension is washed away by the fragrance.
5.They create memories with your loved ones
Flowers connect us by their smell & appearance to events or people in our past. Most people can tell you of a type of flower that was present at a wedding or funeral that is now burned into their memory. Others won't realize until they are exposed to it again later in life & are brought back to that experience. For example I can instantly remember what it feels like to be a little girl in my Grandma Alta's house when I smell a wild rose & I remember what it felt like to be young designer in the south when I see a blooming magnolia tree. According to a study performed by the University of New Jersey "Flowers make intimate connections. The presence of flowers led to increased contact with family and friends."
6.They are the best seasonal decor
Regardless if it is conscious or sub-conscious most people will think of spring when they see tulips & daffodils in the same way as they think of summer when they see sunflowers. As home decor trends have become more & more neutral the last few years, a pop of colour from a fresh bouquet makes an even louder statement. Instead of purchasing seasonal trinkets that need to be dusted & stored until next year you can have all the other benefits from the flowers of the current season while taking part in the current holiday.
7.They are the perfect way to express emotion
Studies show that people who both give & receive flowers feel increased joy & connection. They are the perfect gift for housewarming, hosting or any special event. Nothing makes you feel more special or cherished than to know that someone made a sacrifice of time or finances to add beauty to your life. Flowers are that hug that we aren't there to give or the perfect way to tell someone that they are loved. Even a single bloom can say what words can't & completely turn a day around.
8.They improve your mood
Flowers are proven to boost endorphins produced in the brain that increase positive emotions. Adding a new, bright colour to your day will make you more aware of your surrounding & then adding the fragrance is another mood booster. Often those sights & smells bring back warm memories or connect you with a loved ones that makes your feel cherished. In a flower shop I never tire of handing someone an arrangement & watching their face relax into a smile.
9.They will make you slow down
Flowers are not only temporary & worth taking a moment to enjoy but they are also incredibly detailed. To really be able to take in all of the colour, texture & personality takes more than just a quick glance. There is a reason that we say to "stop & smell the roses". In our fast paced world sometimes we need a reminder that some times we need to just be.
10.They remind us to live life to the fullest
Flowers are so bittersweet. They are used in our culture at the happiest of times but also at the saddest of times. They are used at joyous events such as a wedding, a birth, an engagement or a gesture of love. They are also used to comfort & express sorrow during a death, illness, heartbreak or loss. The short life of a flower is a reminder to us that life is only temporary & that we should make the most of it. Don't wait to reach out to someone or wait any longer to make that big change in your life.
